EY Hungary asked me to photograph one of its events in Budapest. The gallery includes the rooftop setting at St. Andrea Wine & Skybar, guests, conversations and shared moments. Event photography is one of my favourite parts of the job: I enjoy being present, observing and finding the small interactions that make an event feel like itself.

Why this kind of work suits me

My introverted side is quite happy to blend into the background and watch for a fleeting expression. There is less need to direct people than in a portrait session, which gives conversations space to continue.

I also enjoy the other kinds of photography I do. Moving between familiar territory and new challenges keeps the work interesting; I would miss that variety if I only photographed events.

Working with distance and a friendly approach

A telephoto lens lets me photograph natural interactions from farther away. If I need to approach someone, I can be sociable and make them laugh too. My inner introvert simply appreciates having a zoom lens as an option. 🙂

For an event collection, I want more than one kind of people photograph. The wider setting, conversations, a toast and a clear group image can each add something different.

What the gallery helps an organiser assess

Look at the relationship between guests and setting rather than judging the work from one image alone. A full gallery shows the range of photographs that can come from an event with a social atmosphere.

If you are briefing a similar assignment, tell me which people matter most and how the pictures will be used. The networking photography guide explains the candid side of that planning.
